Photo Flashback - September 2015

Every now and then I like to look old photos from the current month, several years back, and find one that I've never shared.   I don't remember what kind of flower this was but it looks prim and pretty by the fence.

Clouds and Caterpillars

I love wandering around my yard, watching the clouds, the tame and the wild growing things.

The clouds below looked like cute Japanese Anime creatures...

Below were creatures of another kind...

My dill plant had several of these Swallowtail caterpillars
munching on it's green stems and sunny yellow flowers.

Beautiful day.

Do Fishes Get Cold In the Snow?

My youngest and I went to visit the fishes at Barrera's this morning, while we were out romping  through the snow.  My son wanted to know if fishes get cold.  I'm sure they do...they were all huddled up on the bottom in one corner of the pond...and didn't come up to the top to greet us like they usually do.

It's times like these I'm really glad I homeschool...well, at least one of my children.  My other two were in school when the snow hit.  After taking a walk out in the white stuff with my youngest, I hemmed and hawed about whether to go get them out of school.  I finally looked at the weather and it said it would get warmer later so I got my youngest re-bundled and got in the car.  It was still snowing when we left, but half way to their school it started to rain.  Alas, no point in them missing a day to play in slush, so we turned around.

But, they tell me they at least got to get out in it for a few minutes.  At the intermediate school the whole school got to go outside for 10 minutes first period.  The elementary school stayed in side for recess (Ptttth!), but during library time the kids were taking pictures through the window, and the librarian had pity on them and let them go outside for a few minutes...though they didn't get to play in it, my son tells me.

I really wished I had come and got them as soon as the snow started.

So, what did you do in the snow?  Did you get a chance to enjoy it?

Christmas Around Waco

I meant to share these pictures BEFORE Christmas but it just didn't happen (also, would have loved to get better ones, but here there are, such as they are.)  I had never seen either of these before...do they do this every year, or did I just miss this previous years?

I love the "Santa on Armadillos" at Pappa Rollo's Pizza.

And this toy soldier painted on...well, whatever that thing was near
where HWY 6 and HWY 84 meet...was just so charming, in spite of the bleak surroundings.  I've always thought that thing looked sort of like a man.

Exhibit at the Armstrong Browning Library: Giving Nineteenth Century Woman Writers a Voice and a Face

My last post was about the Peg Doll which is travelling the world to help victims of human trafficking (modern day slavery).  After taking her to see the Waco Suspension Bridge, I headed over to Baylor.  No room to park at some of the usual spots I visited, but then I found a space near the Armstrong Browning Library.  Perfect!

Inside we learned that there was an exhibit going on titled "Giving Nineteenth Century Women a Voice and a Face."   It continues through December 12, and is absolutely free for anyone who wants to see it (as is all the library).

The exhibit poster featured this quote...

Do give your ear to me --your heart to me
Do grant this confirmation of your voice
To my voice, that it may not speak in vain...
                     ~Elisabeth Barrett Browning

Well, that was certainly timely.    Transitions Global, the organization "Peg" is raising money for, is all about giving women forced into prostitution a voice and a hope.  The quote is beautiful both for giving voices to women of the past, and voiceless women today.

Under the beautiful stained glass windows of the library we found a collection of works by Victorian women authors, along with letters they had written or recieved from the Elizabeth and Robert Browning.

One of the books is by the poet, Christina Rosetti.  She wrote some beautiful Christian verse, and I love the illustration on her book, The Goblin Market (above).

They also had this letter she wrote to the Brownings...

There were also many other writers who I was not familiar with.  One, Augusta Webster, they mentioned wrote a book of poetry called "A Women Sold, and Other Poems," which caught my eye because of the circumstance of our visit.  I looked up the poem later, though, and discovered it had nothing to do with real slavery, but was about a woman who forsook her true love for a marriage of convienence.

It was fun exploring the library.   It's been a long time since I've given it a visit, and this was a great excuse.  While little ones may not enjoy this exhibit particularly, I think this might be something you could take your middle schooler or teenager too.

You can learn more about the exhibit at the Armstrong Browning Webpage.

Peg Doll Travels The World to Help Trafficking Victims

Recently, I had a visitor.  A very tiny one.  I took her around to see the sights.

Meet Peg.  She's about 2" high, loves the color blue,  and is traveling the world to spread awareness about the injustice of human trafficking, a form of modern slavery, and raising money for Transitions Global to help trafficked girls find healing and restoration.

Well, I couldn't let her leave Waco without seeing the Waco Suspension Bridge.

Can you spot her in this picture?

OK, how about now?

After that, we took a trip to Baylor and took in an exhibit on 19th Century Women Authors still going on  at the Armstrong Browning Library.   More on that in a post soon to come!

For now, I leave you with this...there estimated to be as many as 27 million slaves, people made to work or prostitute themselves through force, fraud, or coercion.  We can help change this.  Learn some ways you can help here.   Also, I'd like to invite you to consider participating in Hearts Should Be Free, an online event to help spread awareness of slavery.

Camera Critters: Red Caterpillar

I love backyard bug hunting with my kids.  So many fascinating creatures to find, like this red caterpillar we found early this last December.  I'd never seen a caterpillar like this.  Would love to know what he turns into, if anyone knows.  He looked like he was about to make a cocoon, but we had a freeze that night and the next day I couldn't find him.

Mom, This is the Most Awesome Thing Ever!

Several years ago we got a front loading, energy efficient washer.  I highly reccomend them!  In addition to paying for itself in less than 3 years, it was a constant fascination to our then 1 year old.  He was mesmerized...sometimes stayed to watch the whole cycle.

Need something to occupy your baby while you get dinner fixed?  Forget popping in a video...just throw in a load and plunk them in front of the washer.
